Trick or Treat? Don’t be tricked HVAC system contractors!

Sometimes things are not what they appear to be. For example, not all air conditioning contractors are the same. Some are unlicensed, uninsured and not bonded…and that is a problem. Sure, they’ll offer you a better price. But, BUYER BEWARE…you’ll get what you pay for!

Here is why unlicensed HVAC contractors are super scary:

Unlicensed contractors are a big problem in our area. Anyone can hang a sign on their van and say that they are a contractor, but are they really? Don’t be tricked by them because unlicensed contractors can be the biggest mistake you ever make. When your new HVAC system breaks down, they’ll be nowhere to be found! Unlicensed contractors also risk VOIDING WARRANTIES. That is, if they even use warrantied equipment. They are known to install unwarranted, inferior equipment (because legitimate manufacturers won’t sell to unlicensed contractors). The best way to ensure you are working with a licensed contractor is to ask for their license number and check them out with your city’s licensing department.  Licensing offers proof that the contractor has met certain industry training standards and is allowed to do the work in your area.

And, what about insurance?

Contractors should carry their own insurance for accidents that may happen at your home. If a contractor had an employee on the job at your home who gets injured on your property but the contractor didn’t carry worker’s compensation insurance, you could be held liable. You could be sued and your home insurance premium could be canceled or rates increased.

Finally, a legitimate contractor should be “bonded”.

Bonding is often confused for insurance, but there is a difference. Angie’s List defines it as this, “a bond is intended to act as a guarantee that the contractor will perform the work as he or she is supposed to. It is secured money that would be distributed to the homeowner in the event the contractor failed to perform as he or she should.”

Don’t be tricked by unlicensed, uninsured and unbonded HVAC contractors promoting the best price. It’s a trick to get you to buy!
