A dirty air filter in a house can cause a number of problems, in fact, clogged air filters are the number one reason HVAC systems break down.
A dirty air filter not only affects the continued operation and efficiency of your heating and cooling system, it also creates poor air quality and increased utility bill.
Here are signs of a dirty air filter:
• Dust: Dust will start to accumulate around air vents
• Odors: A dirty filter can cause a strange and unsavory odors throughout the home
• High utility bills: A dirty filter can cause the HVAC system to work harder, which will increase energy costs
• Overheating: A dirty filter can cause the HVAC system to overheat and breakdown costing you hundreds of dollars in unnecessary repairs
• Allergies: A dirty filter can trap allergens and bacteria, which can trigger allergic reactions
• Malfunctioning AC: A dirty filter can cause the AC to malfunction and reduce the lifetime of your system
Effects of a dirty air filter:
• Poor air quality: A dirty filter allows pollutants to circulate through the home, which can degrade indoor air quality
• Respiratory issues: A dirty filter can aggravate allergies and respiratory conditions
• System damage: A dirty filter can cause premature component failure and wear and tear on the unit
• Uneven heating and cooling: A dirty filter can cause uneven heating and cooling meaning you have hot and cold spots in your home causing much discomfort
• Frozen evaporator coils: A dirty filter can cause frozen evaporator coils
To maintain clean indoor air, it’s recommended to replace air filters every one to three months. It is also recommended that Alaskafy your system twice a year: annual check ups to ensure the smooth and efficient operation of your HVAC system.

New Refrigerant Regulations Are Here!
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has set new regulations for HVAC refrigerants that will take effect on January 1, 2025…and Alaskan Air Conditioning and Heating has answered the call with new, safe and high efficiency equipment including heat pumps, ductless mini-splits and conventional A/Cs.
Here is what the EPA is requiring:
- Global Warming Potential (GWP). New air conditioners must use refrigerants with a GWP of 750 or less. This is a significant reduction from the current average of about 2,000 GWP.
- Phasing out R-410A. Phasing in A2L Refrigerants. R-410A will be phased out in residential HVAC systems and replaced with R-454B or R-32, depending on the manufacturer.
The goal of these regulations is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and ozone depletion by using more environmentally friendly refrigerants. The new regulations are expected to improve energy efficiency and they are proving to do so.
So, what does that mean for you? LOWER UTILITY bills for one! And, secondly, you can feel good about doing your part to protect the environment.

Arizona Fall Maintenance: 3 Reasons Why it’s Essential Before the Winter
Why Fall Maintenance is Essential Before Winter Hits in Arizona
It might feel strange thinking about your furnace while we’re still sweating through triple-digit temps here in Arizona, but trust us—it’s better to be ahead of the game. Arizona winters may be short, but they can be chilly, and your furnace has been sitting idle for months. With how busy things get at the end of October, not to mention the chaos of the holiday season, it’s easy to forget to check if your furnace is ready to take on the cold. While those cold nights slowly creep towards us, there’s one important question to ask yourself: Is your furnace safe to run?
Don’t Wait Until It’s Too Late
When it comes to heating, safety is the top priority. Your furnace, especially if it’s gas-powered, poses certain risks if it hasn’t been maintained. Gas furnaces are often installed in attic spaces, which can be out of sight, out of mind. But that means it’s even more crucial to have a trained technician, like our Polar Bear Specialists, perform a full inspection. Here’s why:
- Wear and Tear: Over time, parts like burners, ignition systems, and safety switches can wear down or malfunction.
- Dust and Debris: Furnaces collect dust and dirt over months of inactivity, which can lead to inefficient combustion or even dangerous situations like overheating.
- Fire Hazards: Malfunctioning components or dirty furnace systems can become fire hazards, especially if they’ve been neglected.
Carbon Monoxide – The Silent Danger
One of the most serious risks of an unchecked furnace is a carbon monoxide (CO) leak. CO is an odorless, invisible gas that can be deadly. Furnaces that aren’t properly maintained are more prone to cracks in the heat exchanger or ventilation issues, which can lead to CO leaking into your home. Having a Polar Bear Specialist perform a fall maintenance check will ensure your furnace is operating safely, preventing the possibility of CO poisoning, and giving you peace of mind when you finally switch on the heat.
Protect Your Family and Home
Let’s face it, while we may not fire up the heater as often as folks in colder states, we do depend on our furnaces when temperatures dip. A maintenance check is the best way to protect your family and make sure your furnace is in top condition to handle the cold nights ahead. It’s not just about staying warm; it’s about ensuring your home’s safety. As Ben Franklin said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”—and that couldn’t be more true when it comes to your furnace.
Scheduling a Fall Maintenance check now, while you’re still cranking the AC, means you’ll have one less thing to worry about when the holidays roll around. Like they say, “It’s better to be a week early than a minute late!” Plus, the only surprise you’ll get this winter should be from a gift under the tree—not from a furnace on the fritz.

Arizona Monsoon Madness: Keep Your HVAC Unit Dust-Free
Another Arizona summer means more Monsoon Madness!! The monsoon season has hit hard and it’s a dusty one. Your house should be protecting you from the nasty Arizona dirt, not inviting it in! Keep your HVAC unit clean and working with peak efficiency with these tips from our Polar Bear Leader, William:
Keeping Your Outdoor Unit Clean
“With brutal dust storms, harsh winds, and heavy rain, we want to make sure we keep our outdoor unit as clean as possible. This is where we release the heat from your home to keep you chill and dry”. -William Fiegel, Phoenix General Manager at Alaskan Air Conditioning & Heating
Clear Obstructions Around Your Unit
“You want to keep about 18 inches clear of obstructions (bushes, yard tools, trash, etc.) on at least 3 sides of your outdoor HVAC unit. This is to ensure less dirt and debris to stir up and gather in your unit, allowing the unit to breathe and perform efficiently”.
Imagine your HVAC unit as a marathon runner. It needs space to move, breathe, and perform its best. Overgrown bushes, forgotten yard tools, or even stray trash can block its path, making it work so much harder to do the same task. By simply giving it more breathing room, you’re ensuring it can keep you cool without breaking a sweat.
Rinse Your Unit
“I know it sounds scary, but you can and should regularly wash your outdoor unit to clear built-up dirt. It is okay to take your garden hose and gently rinse that unit. Start at the top, go left to right, or your preference, and work your way down. You want to see the water come all the way through; we should be able to look inside and see the dirt rinse out. Do not use a high-pressure or jet setting on the nozzle, the shower setting will do the job well”.
“A little tip from the Polar Bear Pros, turn off your unit while cleaning, or you could be giving yourself a bit of a shower as the water comes out the top from the unit’s fan”.
Think of this as giving your HVAC unit a spa day. A gentle rinse can do wonders to wash away grime and keep everything running and looking clean.
Check and Replace Your Air Filter
Since so much dirt stirs up during these monsoons, it’s inevitable that some will enter your HVAC unit and make its way into your house. The last thing you want to be doing is inviting that dirt in without proper filtration. Locate your air filter and make sure that it’s looking nice and clean, and replace it if needed.
Your air filter is the unsung hero of your HVAC system and your clean breathing in your house. It catches all that dirt and dust that the monsoons love to pick up and tries to sneak into your home. During this time of the year, the filter is working overtime, so be sure to check it regularly. If it looks like it’s seen better days, swap it out for a fresh one. Your lungs (and your HVAC system) will thank you!
Give Your Unit Some Polar Bear TLC
By following these simple tips, you can ensure your HVAC unit remains efficient and effective throughout the monsoon season. Keeping it clean and obstruction-free not only helps maintain peak performance but also extends the life of your unit. So take a few moments to give your HVAC system the care it deserves, and enjoy a cool, comfortable home even during the dustiest of Arizona summers.
When in doubt, get your system checked with an Alaskafication! Every Alaskafication comes with a professional coil cleaning, ensuring your system is ready to beat the Arizona heat and dust. Stay chill, Arizona!
