7 Reasons You’re A/C is Running But is Not Cooling

WIlburrr, Polar Bear Mascot - Alaskan AC

If your HVAC system isn’t cooling your home — or maintaining the temperature set point on the thermostat — it could be due to several reasons. Some reasons are simple fixes that you can do yourself; others are more complex problems where you need to call an HVAC technician to help.

Here’s are reasons for cooling issues and some potential solutions:

  1. Thermostat Problem 1: Be sure to set the thermostat to the proper setting…the thermostat should be set to “COOL” mode and the temperature is set lower than the current room temperature.
  2. Thermostat Problem 1: Are your batteries in the thermostat still good? Change them to see if that remedies your cooling issue.
  3. Air Filter Problem: Make sure you regularly clean your air filter so air can flow through and provide the amount of cooling called for on the thermostat. A clogged filter restricts airflow, forcing the system to work harder and potentially freeze up.
  4. Ensure vents and ducts are not blocked: Not by furniture, throw rugs or other objects. This will restrict air trying to make their way to the rooms in your house calling for it.
  5. A dirty coil is a reason an air conditioner doesn’t work properly. Annual maintenance helps to keep A/Cs working right and for a long time. Alaskafy your system every spring and fall to keep it working. It’s not too late to call for an A/C tune-up: https://alaskanac.com/ac-maintenance/
  6. Leaking or low refrigerant: A leak can cause the system to run low on refrigerant, reducing its cooling capacity. If you suspect a refrigerant leak, contact us immediately. NEVER add refrigerant yourself. If not done properly, this can cause serious injury.
  7. Your system is old and needs replacing. Systems 10 years or older struggle to keep up with our extreme heat. It may be time for you to replace that old thing. Newer heat pump models are designed to provide air conditioning (and heating) at the highest efficiency possible, saving you on utility costs. And, a new HVAC system comes with a new warranty. That’s peace of mind we all want!
